COP23 for Liberation

Climate Conference in Bonn

Published @ Liberation "COP23"

January 24, 2018

A while back I went to Bonn for the COP23 Climate Conference, to photograph for Liberation. It was a challenging assignment, but in the end, they used a very nice Portrait I am very proud of. The photograph of Tom Goldtooth, Executive Director of the Indigenous Environmental Network.

Happy to see my completely unpublished work from Bangalore, India as a FotoFirst submission on FotoRoom. Head over there to read a little interview with me.

The Project explores Bangalore, which was once known as the »Lake City«, through its rivers and lakes. It is an essay about water in a rapidly growing urbanized City.

Published at Süddeutsche Magazin

with a rather unconventional Portrait

Published @ Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin

October 13, 2017

I photographed Peter Wohlleben before. But I did not photograph his desk. For a special magazine edition, Süddeutsche Magazine sent me to the Eifel to photograph not the best selling author himself but instead his desk, where he wrote most of his fascinating work.

"About the desk: A design Magazine" Peter Wohllebens desk in his beautiful home in the Eifel.

“I am 1.98m tall - there is no desk out of the box. On top of that, I do not like chaos on the table, because I can’t concentrate on it. So the table had to be small (so you can not put much on it), but high, a classic case for a carpenter. I found a craft shop that fulfilled my wishes perfectly. The wood came from a dead elm with traces of beetles. The wood of the table top was brushed so that I can feel the year rings when I pass my hand over it. The construction is so thick and stable that the table can still be used for generations. If I ever have a writer’s block, I run my palm over the wood, feel the old tree and usually right then I have the next idea of what I could still tell about nature.”

My Cover of Galore Literatur

Katty Salié in the minibib - a "Bücherbüdchen im Stadtgarten"

Cover @ Galore Literatur

October 13, 2017

For GALORE Interview Magazine I photographed Katty Salié, the German TV Host of "Aspekte" at a wonderful location the heart of Cologne. The minibib is a micro library inside the city park. The concept is easy but special: Its based on trust. There is no ID required and no data recorded. Every visitor is allowed to take one book per visit for a loan period of two weeks and the book selection is managed by an editor group. There couldn't be a better place to conduct an interview about literature!

I have to say that was one of the more funny assignments. Photographing Michael Busemann, a Beersommelier, in one of Colognes oldest traditional pubs right underneath the Dom. He and the writer were about to test 8 uncommon micro brewery German winter beers, and of course there were some left overs for me. Scheduled for a max. 2h visit, it got more to a 5 hour stay ending up downstairs at the bar celebrating the interview and photo session with some more Kölsch.

I was very very very happy about the new brandeins that reached me a couple of days ago. No, not only a portrait printed but seven! photographes. Yes you can guess I am excited. It looks awesome!

The story is about the "new mobility - the electric car E-GO life". For that I photographed Prof. Dr. Günther Schuh at the RWTH in Aachen, who is convinced that electronic cars should not be expensive and with that hard to sell. He was involved in developing the E-GO life electronic car, with it he wants to proof that electronic cars can be done diffrently than up to today.

Published @ The Washington Post

February 14, 2017

A few weeks back I got a surprising email that lead to one of the most interesting assignments I have ever been called to photograph. I was send to Gelsenkirchen to cover and portrait Yusuf and his family. Yussuf, a now 17 year old radical islamist, is responsible for setting off a home-made bomb in April 2016 outside a Sikh prayer hall in Essen and is ever since then in prison. It was a challanging task but I was still able to make some nice Portraits of his mother Neriman durling a very late night shoot. Can't say I am not extremly proud of the outcome of this.

The full article can be found on the Washington Post website.

“And then one night last April, officials said, the Emir — a Muslim title for an exalted leader — led two cell members to a Sikh house of worship in this industrial city and hurled the bomb toward its door. A deafening boom rang out. Orange flames lit a mosaic of blood and shattered glass. Inside, victims screamed as the assailants fled.

All three terrorists were 16-year-old boys, according to German police.”
“The threat presented by the Islamic State is taking on a new form: child terrorists either directly in contact with or inspired by the militant group. Even as it suffers setbacks on the battlefield in Iraq and Syria, the Islamic State is cultivating adolescents in the West, who are being asked to stay in their home countries and strike targets with whatever weapons are available, such as knives and crude bombs.”
“Yaman’s answer was to take him to an event suggested by a friend — a speech by Pierre Vogel, a former boxer and Muslim convert known for spewing radical Islamist rhetoric who called for a public funeral prayer service for Osama bin Laden after he was killed in Pakistan.

“I didn’t know,” Yaman said, burying her head in her hands. “I had no idea the things [Vogel] said.””

Old new Project »Mukhiani"

November 4, 2016

It has been a while since I updated my Works page with a new project. I worked on this project, »Mukhiani « while I was in Georgia for the Kolga Tbilisi Foto Festival in 2015 where I was nominated. It was a ton of fun to reconnect with some people I met here on my very first trip to Georgia. Again, it gave me wonderful memories of generous people in the neighborhood of Mukhiani … and I drank the heaviest Chacha of Georgia. But please look for yourself:
